Why DIY ?!

In my early teens, I was the biggest DIYer ever. If it was on YouTube, I thought knew how to do it: twist outs individual briads, sew-ins, ponytails, quick weaves, a little streak of color, omg it was bad!

It wasn’t into I started working as a professional hairstylist that I realized how much damage I actually did to my hair.

The cons of doing it yourself.

  1. The Breakage - split ends, random short pieces of hair, broken edges from baby hairs

  2. Product Build Up from not properly shampooing, and/or leaving hair masks on for long periods of time.

  3. Too much work. TikTok makes it look too easy. Doing your own hair can be a choreee. Honest, sitting in a chair is a luxury. Think of all the work you can get done, and the sleep you can catch up on.

I understand.

Doing your own hair is convenient for emergencies, it can be a lower cost, and sometimes trying to match a stylist’s schedule can be difficult. Some weeks you have no choice but to do it yourself.

Tips for the inevitable circumstances.

  • Take Your Time!

    1. This will help you manage your hair better and thoroughly style it.

    1. Break your hair into 9 or more sections for each step of the process: detangle, shampoo, blow dry, & style.

  • Do Less Ponytails

    1. Move your ponytails and parts to different parts of your head

    2. Remove ponytail holders at night

    3. Do not tie the ponytail holders too tight

    4. Always loosen your edges; there is tension even if you can’t feel it.

  • Minimize Build Up

    1. Do not go over 24 hours with a hair mask.

    2. Use a cleansing or clarifying shampoo as your first shampoo.

  • See A Professional Regularly

    1. Book a trim with a professional hairstylist every 3-4 months

    2. Refrain from applying any chemicals on your hair: relaxers, color, chemical treatments, etc.

    3. Apply very little to no heat on your hair at home ex. flat irons, curling irons

  • Be Gentle During the Detangle

    1. Do not comb through hardened edge control - add water or oil to loosen edge control

    2. Detangle the ends of your hair first

    3. Personally wide combs > brushes when detangling

    4. Add detangler or mist water and conditioner mixed
